Barbra Streisand serenades Oprah plus rare Robert Redford Appearance
Barbra Streisand sat down with Oprah this past Wednesday, November 10 to tape her fourth (4 is one of Streisand’s lucky numbers – doesn’t everyone know that?) and final appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show (DVD collection here). Barbra first sat down with Winfrey in Los Angeles in 1996 to promote The Mirror Has Two Faces, the second time came around in 2003 where Barbra promoted her sublime set of silver screen songs entitled The Movie Album, the third in 2009 to promote Barbra’s #1 charting Jazz album, Diana Krall produced, Love Is The Answer and now finally, Barbra popped in to woo fans into her latest endeavor, Barbra Streisand: My Passion For Design, a home decor book.

Redford & Streisand from The Way We Were, 1973
I was lucky enough to be in the studio audience that day — and not only was it outrageously cool that Robert Redford waltzed out on stage (he looks so much better in person these days than in print — and his down to earth, humble personality came through loud & clear) but even cooler to see Barbra and Bob…or rather Katie and Hubble sitting there 10 feet in front of me holding hands as if they were husband and wife sitting on the porch swing. Surreal moment to be sure. That alone was worth the price of admission.

What was also special and quite rare? Barbra Streisand serenading Lady O with a new version of The Way We Were written especially for this taping, to air this Tuesday, November 16th.

“Barbra Streisand’s Tribute Song To Oprah” — Sung To The Tune “The Way We Were”
Oprah…
Lights the corners of the world
Who we are to one another
And the way we were
Just imagine
all the people that we’ve met
and the soul to soul connection
all because of her
Building dreams and opening so many doors
Changing minds and lives along the way
Offering a chance to those the world ignores
And if she can, then we can
Memories, of so many of the years
They felt safe to tell their secrets
Along with her, we share the tears
Thanks….thanks for the memories
Of always knowing
The perfect way of showing
The way we were
The way we were….
It was like buttah. Talk amongst yourselves, I’m getting verklempt again.
