Megan Hilty says “Bombshell” musical won’t land on Broadway soon

Turn her Loos: Megan Hilty

Tonight Megan Hilty–who plays Ivy on NBC’s Smash–opens at New York’s City Center in the Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Hilty will take the role of Anita Loos’ legendary siren Lorelei Lee, portrayed by Carol Channing in the original 1949 Broadway run of the show and by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film.

There have been rumors that Smash‘s fictional Monroe biomusical, Bombshell, will eventually make its way to the New York stage. Such a venture would make sense, as the show has a built-in fan base. I mean, some of us have been humming the Bombshell songs “Let Me Be Your Star” and “History Is Made at Night” for weeks now.

In yesterday’s New York Times profile of Hilty, Erik Piepenburg asked Hilty which show would be likely to come to Broadway first: a revival of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or a live staging of Bombshell?

“This one’s all ready to go,” Hilty said, referring to Gentlemen. “Bombshell would take years and years and years to put together.”

Darn- about 5 numbers sound great. Marc can write some hummable tunes. The story might need some shaping.

And “Let’s Be Bad”! :) I really hope so. Also how perfect, Megan Hilty as Lorelei…we did Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend for Show Choir this year and I just love that connection between Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Smash/Bombshell :)
