I have spent an entire life loving George Carlin: my father was a fan of his standup in the 70’s and 80’s; I grew up on Class Clown and Carlin at Carnegie. Language was colorful in my house. My brothers and sister never picked that up from him, but I was blessed with my dad’s penchant for cursing and knew those seven words at a much younger age than I should have or that my teachers then would have appreciated. As I grew up and my own views began to take shape Carlin came along with me. As my devoutly…

(Reuters) – American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak, whose children’s book “Where the Wild Things Are” has been a standard bedtime story for at least three generations, has died at the age of 83. “We are terribly saddened at the passing of Maurice Sendak. He was a glorious author and illustrator, an amazingly gifted designer, a blisteringly funny raconteur, a fierce and opinionated wit, and a loyal friend to those who knew him. His talent is legendary; his mind and breadth of knowledge equally so,” Susan Katz, the president and publisher of HarperCollins Children’s Books, which published his books, said…

Gypsy Rose Lee died on this date in 1970 less than a year after she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She was only 59 years old. There was a lot more to her life than even the musical Gypsy. One of the great loves of her life was Mike Todd before Elizabeth Taylor nabbed him more than a decade later. She was a connoisseur of art – at, at least, artists. Her collection included works by Picasso, Miro, Chagall, and Ernst which she claimed were all gifts given to her by the artists themselves. She and Picasso became “close” with…

April 14, 2012 is notable for being the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster. But it is also a happier anniversary for the city of Portland, Oregon. Today Packy, the Oregon Zoo’s famed elephant, turns 50. When he bowed in, in 1962, the son of mother Belle and dad Thonglaw, he was the first elephant to be born in North America in more than four decades. His birth created a sensation and inspired writer Shana Alexander (later of 60 Minutes fame) to write an article that became an 11-page spread for Life magazine. Swarms of curious kids and adults visited…

“It is with tremendous sadness that we mark the passing of Mike Wallace. His extraordinary contribution as a broadcaster is immeasurable, and he has been a force within the television industry throughout its existence.
