“Prosecuting Casey Anthony”– The 2 Hour Lifetime movie in 2 Minutes [VIDEO]

rob_lowe_casey_anthony

Rob Lowe is an amazingly good guy, and a fine actor in “Prosecuting Casey Anthony.” Virginia Welch as “Tot Mom” Casey Anthony? — she nailed it.

But here it is in a nutshell.

Prosecuting Casey Anthony basically tries to explain how public opinion and the deliberating jury responded so differently to the conflicting stories of prosecution and defense, one alleging that Anthony murdered the child and dumped her in a swamp, the other that the actual cause of death was accidental drowning in a swimming pool.”

“What went wrong?” Florida state prosecutor Jeff Ashton (Rob Lowe) is asked during the course of a TV interview long after his case against Casey Anthony had circled down the drain.

“You mean other than the verdict? Not a thing.”

Barbra Streisand

Barbra Streisand will be saluted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center at an event in New York in April for the 40th annual Chaplin Award Gala.

Announcing the latest Chaplin Award recipient, Film Society chairman Ann Tenenbaum said in a statement:

“She [Streisand] is an artist whose long career of incomparable achievements is most powerfully expressed by the fact that her acclaimed [film] Yentl was such a milestone film. We welcome her to the list of masterful directors who have been prior recipients of the Chaplin Award Tribute.”

“Streisand’s veteran dramatic sense effortlessly drives Chaplin’s “Smile” beyond schmaltz…”

The Film Society’s annual gala began in 1972 and honored Charlie Chaplin, who returned to the States from exile to accept the accolade. The award was renamed for Chaplin, and has honored the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Laurence Olivier, Elizabeth Taylor, James Stewart and Meryl Streep.

They gotta Crowe….NOT. “Les Miz” star’s name omitted from live Oscar-cast list

With apologies to Ed McMahon: "Ja-VERRRRRRRT's Russell!!!"

With apologies to Ed McMahon: “Ja-VERRRRRRRT’s Russell!?!”

Cast members from the film musical Les Misérables will perform selections from the film’s score at this year’s Oscar telecast, reports Playbill.com, citing a UK Daily Mail story.

Says the report: “Watchers can expect to see Les Misérables stars Hugh Jackman, Samantha Barks, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and more.”

Conspicuously absent from that list of performers is the name Russell Crowe. Whether that’s a mere oversight or a very deliberate omission is unclear. If the latter, it’s probably welcome news to most discerning music lovers.

We’ll all find out when the Academy Award presentation is telecast on February 24.

Simply “Shrew”-biz for Anne Hathaway?

Anne-anne-hathaway-4725415-1024-768

Next to the arguably anti-Semitic The Merchant of Venice no play in the Shakespearean canon more rankles people for its un-PC attributes than the seemingly anti-feminist comedy The Taming of the Shrew. Those who defend it sometimes invent scenarios by which the play’s “shrew,” Kate, is not in fact “tamed” by her husband Petruchio, but is in fact in league with him to make outsiders think she’s been subdued.

Whatever gets you through the iambic pentameter.

Some people still find the play viable and funny. I am not among them. Having acted in Shrew back in college, I have no desire to ever see or read it again.

But maybe I’ll wind up doing so.

A.H. may soon be brushing up her Shakespeare

A.H. may soon be brushing up her Shakespeare

Today reports have surfaced that Anne Hathaway—last Sunday’s Golden Globe winner, not the wife of William Shakespeare—will star in a new film version of Shrew. The adaptation is said to be by writer Abi Morgan.

According to a report in Playbill.com today: “The film will be a modern-day take on the battle of the sexes that will be set in Italy.”

Does that mean Morgan is using the text of Shakespeare’s play or only the basic storyline?

Stay tuned.

“When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron…”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler need to host every award show.

That said, this was BY FAR one of the stand-out jokes of the night.

“When it comes to torture, I trust the lady who spent three years married to James Cameron…”

Jennifer Lawrence “disses” Meryl Streep — Um, no she didn’t

j-law-2

“When collecting her Golden Globe from Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, Jennifer’s first words were ‘What does it say? I beat Meryl!’. Was this a diss, or was Jennifer just shocked to have beat the most victorious actress ever?”

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

Neither. It was a joke in reference to the film “First Wives Club.”

The woman even said, “jokes aside” for the socially impaired. Because guess what? It’s a funny line no matter where it came from.

Everyone just breathe and get on with it… (I’m talking you, LiLo.)

Your 2013 Oscar snubs and surprises (Spoiler: There are no surprises) [Full VIDEO]

Argo1

Snub what?

Why is there such an outcry over “snubs” with the 2013 Oscar nomination announcements?

Don't shoot the messenger, a one Stewart Gilligan Griffin...err... Seth MacFarlane

Don’t shoot the messenger, a one Stewart Gilligan Griffin…err… Seth MacFarlane

There are NINE “Best Picture” nominees and FIVE “Best Director” nominees.

You do the math.

The Academy Awards, frankly, are nothing but a dated, showbiz-joke. It’s all about ass-kissing — and is a gigantic popularity contest based on politics. Who doesn’t know this yet?

I know this makes no sense, but let me walk you though it a bit…

Spielberg got it because — he’s Spielberg.

Affleck didn’t get it because he’s too young and hasn’t “earned it” — plus he already got an Oscar out of the gate for “Good Will Hunting.” Let’s make him suffer a bit more before the next Gold Guy.

Kathryn Bigelow already won for “The Hurt Locker” — it’s too soon. Plus, she’s a chick. (See: Barbra Streisand).

Quvenzhané Wallis won’t win for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” — this nom ties into the PR stunt with Emmanuelle Riva.

Emmanuelle Riva will win for “Amour” — because she’s old.

Yada, yada, yada…and so on, and so forth.

HBO picking up properties “too gay” for theatrical release?

Tickling the ivories: Damon and Douglas in "Candelabra"

Is HBO the go-to place for film projects with a strong gay theme?

Seems to be the case.

In a recent interview with the New York Post, director Steven Soderbergh revealed that HBO will screen Behind the Candelabra, his biopic about showman extraordinaire Liberace and his lover—played, respectively, by Michael Douglas and Matt Damon. The film (which will reportedly be Soderbergh’s last) was originally intended as a theatrical release, but it proved to be “too gay” for studios.

Tickling the ivories: Damon and Douglas in “Candelabra”

“We went to everybody in town,” the director said. “They all said it was too gay.”

Promos for the film have shown clips of Douglas and Damon shirtless and about to kiss.

Meanwhile, it’s been reported that HBO will screen the upcoming Ryan Murphy film of the Larry Kramer AIDS play The Normal Heart. Kramer tried for years—decades, in fact—to get a big-screen version of Heart made. During much of that time he worked with director Barbra Streisand, who reportedly encouraged him at one point to place the project with a cable network such as HBO.

When Murphy came aboard, the project—which is set to star Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts—was expected to appear as a theatrical release. That now seems not to be the case.

While it’s unclear whether Heart–like Candelabra–was shunned by studios because of gay content, it’s interesting that HBO wound up with both properties.

Hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since HBO launched the gay-themed miniseries Angels in America (based on the Tony Kusher plays). That series won critical praise, not to mention a slew of Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
