Amy Sedaris…Meth Expert…er…Laundry Expert?
My, my, my, it is a rough economy. Amy Sedaris — or as I think of her — Jeri Blank, is shilling for Downy. The scent boosters appear to be the “active ingredient” in glint and even more so, in the special blend of blue meth Walt concocts on Breaking Bad. Notice what time it is on the wall-clock behind Sedaris. Do you know why it’s ten minutes to two? There’s a reason. Let me know what you think it is in the comment section and I’ll tell you if you’re right.
Tom Whitcomb’s Best of 2011
A whole lot happened in media this year. A lot of my favorite bands released new music (some of them broke up – R.I.P.R.E.M.), some great movies came out, and television had one of its finest years in recent memory. Seeing how I never really have much else to do with my free time, I took it upon myself to check out as much of it as I can. When the dust settled, this right here is what I decided was the best of the big four categories – music, movies, TV, and books – to drop in 2011. Album…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E11, “Crawl Space”
WARNING: SPOILERS Each Sunday night, I turn on my TV with the expectation of Breaking Bad making me stare blankly at the screen for an hour, mouth agape. It’s violent, anarchic, guttural, and a million other words that critics use. Every episode has been building up to some sort of smash-bang climax, in which everything all begins to make sense in some strange way. Well, in “Crawl Space”, the shit finally hits the fan. A sketchy Mexican medical outpost transfuses Gus’ blood and steals Mike away from Jesse while his gunshot wound heals. Gus appoints Jesse the new chief cook…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E10, “Salud”
WARNING: SPOILERS As fans were well aware, this year’s Primtime Emmys came and went with our beloved Breaking Bad noticeably absent. Well, over on AMC, the critically acclaimed meth slingers were putting up this season’s most electrifying (so far) episode. While Kyle Chandler was dethroning Bryan Cranston as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Cranston’s fictional business associates were raising mad hell. The cat is out of the bag now for Albuquerque meth king Gustavo Fring. When he and his loyal associates went down to Mexico to teach the cartel’s chemists to cook blue, some serious shit went down….
“Breaking Bad”: S4E8, “Hermanos”
WARNING: SPOILERS It’s been a widely acknowledged fact within the Breaking Bad universe that Gustavo Fring is one hardcore son of a bitch. He’s the gentleman criminal who kills with a box cutter and operates behind a deep fried curtain; the one person in Walt’s universe that always leaves him keenly aware that he’s not invisible. For the first time in ages, fans of the show were finally given the Gus episode we’ve always wanted. Hank is on to Gus now. Even though he dropped a rock-solid alibi on the lawmen, Walt’s brother in law refuses to buy his innocence….
“Breaking Bad”: S4E7, “Problem Dog”
WARNING: SPOILERS More of my screen grabs for this season of Breaking Bad have featured Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman almost double that of any other character. And not, as we find out in this week’s “Problem Dog”, without good reason. Paul, who has won one Emmy prior to this season for his role, is essentially the human for-your-consideration tape. This season belongs to Jesse, and it’s high time Aaron Paul reaps another reward for his top-flight performances. “Problem Dog” is another episode that lets Paul empty the tank, as well. We see him struggle with Walt’s orders to poison Gus,…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E6, “Cornered”
WARNING: SPOLIERS Each week, Breaking Bad spirals further down the rabbit hole, though now in different ways. Walter is succumbing to paranoia, and Jesse is displaying the type of sullen badassitude that only years of hard living can create. Skyler is starting to lose faith in Walt’s reassurances. All over the course of just an hour! Even when it’s down, Breaking Bad is at the top. In the White house, things are getting rocky again. Walt defiantly tells Skyler that he is the danger. Nobody knocks at his door; he does the knocking. This continues an entertaining streak of a…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E5, “Shotgun”
WARNING: SPOILERS With AMC renewing Breaking Bad for its fifth and final season this week, the best show on television has been put in an interesting spot. With the end in sight, something drastic could happen at any time. There’s no need to keep people alive when it all comes down to the end of the next season. As its internal clock winds down, we’re left to the devices of creator Vince Gilligan, the evil genius behind the curtain. Accordingly, the end appears to be in sight for Walter and Jesse. In the White household, Walt’s recent paranoia has caused…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E4, “Bullet Points”
WARNING: SPOILERS After last week’s slow-burner, it was great to see this week’s Breaking Bad return to its Tyler, the Creator-cribbing “kill people, burn sh*t, f**k school” formula. This week was full of foreshadowing, for Walt’s personal life and for Jesse’s life in general. And like most ominous happenings, it began with the return of Mike the cleaner. One of the show’s more intriguing characters, this week’s episode opened to Mike besting his failed assailants, but not before they took part of his ear. But the cleaning action didn’t stop there. We saw him make a stop at Jesse’s drug…
“Breaking Bad”: S4E3, “Open House”
WARNING: SPOILERS Apologies for the late posting of this week’s Breaking Bad recap, I got a little distracted by the hullaballoo surrounding Paul McCartney’s two night stand at Wrigley Field, a mere few blocks from me. Not much was missed in last night’s episode however, per se. It still contained vital happenings, but nothing really involving our two anti-heroes. Its supporting characters drove its plot. Not much was seen of Walt and Jesse this week, but what was at least held attention. The discovery of security cameras in his lab has pissed Walt off, and the tension between he and…
